Roy Clark Visits Union
MAKING MUSIC: Legendary country singer Roy Clark donated one of his instruments to kick off a district-wide musical instrument drive at Union.
Country singer Roy Clark helped kick off a district-wide musical instrument drive at his namesake school in the Union School District, Clark Elementary, by donating a favorite band instrument of his own.
Union asked the public to donate any new or gently used instruments to the district to ensure that all interested students may participate in band or orchestra.
“More than 50 percent of the fifth graders at Clark alone have enrolled for band or orchestra next year,” Principal Teresa Kiger says, crediting the country singer for much of the increased interest in music following his benefit concert in 2007.
“Funds from that benefit concert enabled us to buy guitars, instruments and provide piano labs for students in our before and after school clubs. We need to continue providing students with the opportunity to participate in band and orchestra as they move on to the Union Sixth/Seventh Grade Center, but it is dependant upon them having access to an instrument. We would like to give our patrons and community the opportunity to contribute to a great cause, helping students express themselves in a fun, positive, educational atmosphere.”
More than 750, or about 75 percent, of the in-coming sixth graders from throughout the district want to participate in instrumental music next school year. Union currently provides 150 instruments to sixth graders who do not own or rent, and interest is growing.
To keep up with the demand, Matthew McCready, the assistant director for Fine Arts and director of the Union Renegade Regiment Marching Band, says Union is asking the public to take their donated instruments such as flutes, clarinets, trumpets, trombones, percussion sets, basses, guitars, and other stringed instruments to any elementary school or to Union High School.
