DANIEL C. CAMERON for Union Boundary
The Union Redskins football team is red hot maybe even unbeatable.
The team runs its games like a well-oiled wheel. They play with discipline and athleticism. They are the epitome of high school football.
The one thing that looks to stop Union is itself. Examples include the Jenks game early in the season. The Skins lost by two with five turnovers. The team recovered. Four first half turnovers versus Claremore sent a chilly scare through Redskin nation. Again, the team recovered and won 27-9.
This is where the discipline and excellent coaching comes in. Union could have folded after the Jenks loss, but they have put together an historic season instead. Similarly in the playoffs, Union came out of the locker room in the second half against Claremore inspired, ready to take state.
Kirk Fridrich is an outstanding coach. He is draped with coach of the year accolades and has won the 6A-3 district all three years he has been head coach at Union. Not to mention last year’s state championship.
Fridrich takes his teams and utilizes the strengths and weapons where he recognizes them. His mastery of the game and leadership has the players wanting to play their best.
Another key to this team’s success the last two years is Cole Way. Way is a top ten kicker nationally. He has racked up kicking points and averages over 40 yards per punt. Way has a career long 55 yard field goal.
