Junior Earns Award from President’s Council

Union High School Junior Gavyn Clare recently earned the status of a Silver Award in the Advanced Performance Presidential Champions Program from the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. Gavyn is a member of the Redskins Football squad.

In addition, through dedication, determination, discipline and sheer hard work, he is already 75 percent of the way towards the Gold Award in the Advanced Performance Presidential Champions program.

The President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports was established as the President’s Council on Youth Fitness in 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower after he learned the results of a report indicating that American children were less fit than European youth.

The first Council was chaired by Vice President Richard Nixon.
In 1963, President John F. Kennedy changed the name to the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and expanded the mandate to all Americans as well as youth.

In 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson broadened the Council’s mission to include sports and changed the name to the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

Past chairs of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports include: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Florence Griffith Joyner and Lee Haney.
