Tulsa Public Schools Celebrate Wind Turbine
HARNESSING WIND: Dr. Keith Ballard, Dr. Lana Turner-Addison, Mayor Kathy Taylor and others listen on as Adrianna Rodriquez discusses wind harnessed energy.
The Tulsa Public Schools Renewable Energy Celebration was recently held Nov. 5 at HelmZar Challenge Course and Facility. Mayor Kathy Taylor cut the ribbon heralding the installation and operation of Tulsa’s first wind turbine. The turbine has been installed by Global NES-Oklahoma, sponsor of the recent Tulsa Public Schools Essay Contest on Sustainable Energy to create awareness about renewable energy sources.
First place essay contest winner Adriana Rodriguez helped Mayor Taylor cut the ribbon. The celebration included a science fair on site with exhibits about renewable energy.
Mayor Kathy Taylor, Dr. Keith Ballard, Global NES representatives, Tulsa Public Schools representatives and Renewable Energy Essay Contest winners enjoyed the event along with the community.
The Sustainable Energy Essay Contest was announced to Tulsa Public Schools Middle School students in September, with the theme, “Sustainable Energy: It’s Important to our Community.” The winners were announced at a news conference on Sept. 25.
As a result of the contest, sponsoring company Global NES and affiliated companies agreed to install a wind turbine at a Tulsa Public Schools site in Tulsa and to provide materials and science kits on sustainable energy to the schools of the winning students.
Wind energy is one of many types of energy that is considered to be sustainable and is obtainable with minimal damage to the environment.
Most of Oklahoma has been categorizes by the U.S. Department of Energy as having “Good” to “Fair” potential for wind energy creation.
