Bud Hail is in his ninth year as the Edison Eagles baseball head coach. The Midtown Monitor caught up with him as he prepared his team before a game with Tulsa Will Rogers early in the season.

Hail’s Eagles are a hard working bunch and always striving to improve on their record and garner a spot in the regional tournament playoffs held May.

The Eagles’ four seniors, Evan White, Josh Hemsosh, Mason Van den Born and Aaron Varhock expressed enthusiasm that they will fulfill the team’s motto “Ungawa,” meaning ‘the underdog gets the bigger team.’ Varnhock adds, “We are the underdogs, and we are playing hard to make the playoffs.”

The Eagles are in the tough Green Country conference, playing all Tulsa Public School teams and Bishop Kelley. The top team in their conference is presently Tulsa Memorial.

The players believe in themselves and are working hard to improve their ranking among the other state teams. They have better teamwork with more talent and potential than last year’s team. The Eagles believe that by playing their “A” game every time they get on the field, they can beat anyone.

Working as a team rather than as individuals has been their goal for the season. Mason Van den Born says, “When we play together and stay strong we are aggressive like the African Honey Bees. We want to go far so we can make the regional playoffs.”

Josh Hemsoth contributes, “We have a chance early on to improve. If we do the best that we can now, and improve we will get a good regional seed. That is what we are striving for. I believe we can do that.”
