Webster Media Magnet Highlights Success

BROADCASTING BRILLIANCE: Webster High School’s new Broadcast Center magnet program offers students opportunities to gain experience in the media arts.

On February 24, Daniel Webster High School and Tulsa Public School officials cut the ribbon towards success by opening their new Broadcast Center. Dozens of community supporters attended the ribbon cutting ceremony and enjoyed a tour of this state-of-the-art, high definition studio. They also learned how KWHS, channel 20 gives Webster students hands-on experience with industry-grade equipment, while they strive for excellence in education. This also gives students an opportunity they can’t find in any other school than Webster.

Usually, this level of technology is not taught until students are out of high school, giving them a better chance at landing a future job in broadcasting.

The new Broadcast Center’s Ribbon Cutting Ceremony also offered an opportunity to highlight the three areas of study offered through Webster’s Broadcast and Digital Media Magnet School. The three areas are 1) Broadcasting 2) Journalism, Marketing and Graphic Design, and 3) Information Technology.

Just this year, students have begun to step up and take advantage of the newly offered programs. Several of them spoke at the ceremony to demonstrate how the magnet school is already impacting their lives. For example, Jose Vega, a sophomore at Webster, won first place in the State Career Poster contest by creating a document on Photoshop that represented how anyone can dream and realize a future career. Vega says, “This is so amazing. I’ve wanted to work in graphic design and now, it’s becoming a reality. Because of my presentation on my poster today, the Hispanic newspaper, La Semana, wants to hire me as a paid intern this summer. This never would’ve happened without Webster.”

Broadcast student, Brittany Garel spoke at the event saying, “I tell people about what I get to do at Webster and they hardly believe me. I’m working at a TV station, while in school…and it’s free. Who can beat that?” Both of these students are great examples of how the students at Webster are taking advantage and accomplishing the idea behind the magnet program.

Webster faculty and staff now feel that the tools are in place for the school to become a well-rounded learning experience. That through the new Broadcast Center, Journalism, marketing, graphic design and IT courses, there is a sign of hope for the students that attend Daniel Webster. This inspires students like me, that every student who puts their minds to something, who has a dream to fill, that through this program and the Broadcast Center, they will succeed.
