Neighbor for Neighbor is accepting applications and sponsorships for four $1,000 scholarships to help local high school students attend college.
Applicants are asked to submit a 1,000 to 1,500-word essay regarding health issues and their relationship to poverty. Sample topics may include, but are not limited to, obesity, food insecurity, and depression and how those conditions detrimentally affect schoolwork, obtaining employment or keeping employment. Essays need to be accompanied by one letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor or administrator.
Additionally, NFN is soliciting local donors to help sponsor the scholarships.
“NFN educates the community about issues of poverty as part of its mission,” says Ann Smith, executive director. “These scholarships will help Tulsa’s youth develop an understanding of the role that health issues play in relation to poverty. NFN hopes this experience will encourage the participants to open their minds. Once exposed to these types of issues, their future decisions and choices will be based on a broader perspective that will benefit the whole community.”
Financial need will be considered in two of the four applications. For more information, including a complete list of requirements visit www.neighborforneighbor.org.
