Memorial High School’s engineering and robotics team has nabbed another prize, recently winning the Chairman’s Award at the FIRST competition in St. Louis, Mo. FIRST stands for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.
Earning the award means Memorial’s team qualifies for the nationals in Atlanta, Ga. next month. The team also won safety awards during the FIRST competition, including Best Pit Design. Engineering Academy Director Lane Matheson received the Woody Flowers Award, entitling her to special recognition during the upcoming finals. Flowers is a professor of mechanical engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a member of the Game and Kit Design Committee for the FIRST Robotics competition.
According to their Web site, the FIRST competition is “an exciting, multinational competition that teams professionals and high-school students to solve an engineering design problem in an intense and competitive way.”
