TPS Seeks New Athletic Director

Tulsa Public Schools is seeking a new athletic director in the wake of Stephanie Spring’s resignation on Friday, Jan. 20.

According to Kevin Burr, associate superintendent of secondary schools, an advisory group has been appointed to scout the best prospects and narrow the field. “We are confident this position will attract many highly-qualified and well-regarded candidates,” said Burr. “TPS has earned a reputation for excellence and high expectations in all fields, including athletics. We are eager to open the door to a new chapter of continued excellence and success in athletics.”

Serving on the advisory group and assisting the Office of Secondary Schools in the search are the following: Mike Mims, assistant principal, Booker T. Washington High School; Stacey Vernon, principal, Will Rogers College High School; Michael Parrish, head men’s basketball coach, Edison High School; Thad Leonard, owner, Carl Leonard & Sons; and Gil Cloud, former athletic director, Northeastern State University.

Qualified candidates for the athletic director position should send their resume and credentials to Associate Superintendent Kevin Burr at burrke@tulsaschools.org or contact him at the Office of Secondary Schools at 918-746-6301 or 918-746-6287. A job description may be found on the TPS website under “Careers.”

Burr said it is likely an interim athletic director will be hired temporarily, until the permanent position is filled. “We are exploring our options and will announce something once that individual is identified,” said Burr.

Since Nov. 15, 2011, Stephen Mayfield, executive assistant to the association superintendent of secondary schools, has served as TPS acting athletic director, after the suspension of Spring. “We greatly appreciate the work that Steve has done. He will continue to assist during the transition, however, we need to free him up so he can get back to his regular duties,” said Burr. “We plan to have an interim athletic director in place as quickly as possible.”

Please visit the TPS website at www.tulsaschools.org for additional information and updates.
