Hurricane Warning: TU Looks Hot

Football is in the air and it is only June. It could be all the Big 12 talk or the high school skills camps all over the state. It could be all the news coming out of H.A. Chapman Stadium.

In a recent Tulsa Sports Charities Luncheon, TU head coach Todd Graham addressed media members and Hurricane faithful, setting up high expectations.
Coach said junior G.J. Kinne is still the top quarterback, but there is some healthy competition coming out of younger Shavodrick Beaver. Coach said the team looks great and with the addition of Chad Morris as co-offensive coordinator and QB coach, things are developing with the offense that have the Golden Hurricane on track to meet the standards of a program that is used to leading the nation in offense. “We will win,” says Graham.

He also snuck in a tidbit that there might be another surprise with the uniforms.
More exciting developments have to do with the eligibility of OU transfer Jameel Owens and TU three-year letter-winner Charles Davis, who have both recently been granted wavers from the NCAA.

Owens, a 6’3” receiver, will have three seasons of eligibility at TU beginning with the 2010 season. Owens transferred to TU from the University of Oklahoma following the fall 2009 semester. He asked for the waiver after moving closer to home due to his mother’s health.

“Jameel has a tremendous amount of ability, great size and speed. But right now he’s going through the developmental stage in learning our offensive system. We think he’s a great talent and are anxious to see how he transitions forward,” says Graham.

Owens had a red-shirt year last season for the Sooners. He played as a true freshman in 2008 and caught four passes for 44 yards.

Davis suffered an ACL tear to his left knee against OU in the third game of the 2009 season.

The 5’10” defensive back has played in 42 career games with 29 starting assignments. Davis has tallied 171 tackles, 12 pass breakups and two interceptions in his career.

Phil Steele’s College Football Preview Magazine recently named TU’s Junior Damaris Johnson a pre-season All-American. The nation’s all-purpose yardage leader in 2009 was named fourth team preseason All-America as a receiver. He led the team in kick return, punt return and receiving yards last year.

Johnson caught 78 passes for a team-high 1,131 yards and had three touchdowns for the Hurricane in 2009. He also had a 24.6 kickoff return and 14.2 punt return average. Johnson ranked third in Conference USA for receiving yards per game at 94.2 yards. He had the highest yards per reception among the top-7 C-USA receivers.
