Harvest Festival and Chili Cook-off Heats Up Owasso

OWASSO HARVEST FESTIVAL/CHILI COOK-OFF

The City of Owasso’s Annual Harvest Festival and the Oklahoma State Chili Cook-off partnered for one great event that was held Oct. 24 in Centennial Park.

The event was free for all to attend. Families throughout the area enjoyed the festivities and tasted some of the best chili and salsa in the state.

This year’s Harvest Festival was full of events and activities for the whole family to participate in and enjoy. The festival’s events included: hay rides, bounce houses, face painting, a car show, a trackless train, games and concessions. The Owasso Police, Fire and Public Works Departments were on hand to greet kids throughout the day.

There were a number of fun contests for everyone to participate in. There was a scarecrow, pumpkin carving and costume contest. There was even the Chili Dog Contest for dogs to show off their Halloween costumes.

“This was a great way for families from all over the City to come together and have a good time,” says Warren Lehr, the assistant city manager.

The Oklahoma State Chili Cook-off is sanctioned by the International Chili Society and is divided into three main categories: Chili Verde, or green chili, Red Chili and Salsa. Awards were given for First Place and People’s Choice in all three categories. There was also an award presented for Showmanship and for the Best Brand New ICS Look.

“Chili cook-offs are a lot of fun for the whole family,” says John Fenrich, the State of Oklahoma Chili Cook-off chairman, “in addition to tasting a lot of great chili, there is music and all kinds of other activities for everyone to get involved.” Fenrich adds that the winners in the state championship portion of the cook-off will represent Oklahoma at the 2010 International Chili Society World Championship cook-off.

All of the proceeds from the chili cook-off went to the Owasso YMCA and the Owasso High School Band Patrons.
