Scholarships Educate High-School Students About Health, Poverty

Neighbor for Neighbor recently announced it is accepting applications and sponsorships for four $1,000 scholarships to help local high school students attend college.

Applicants are asked to submit a 1,000 to 1,500-word essay regarding health issues and their relationship to poverty. Sample topics may include, but are not limited to obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, food insecurity, dental health or depression, and how those conditions detrimentally affect school work, obtaining employment or keeping employment. Essays need to be accompanied by one letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor or administrator.

In addition, NFN is soliciting local donors to help sponsor the scholarships. Donors may do so in honor of a friend or loved one.
NFN educates the community about issues of poverty as part of its mission,” said Ann Smith, executive director. “These scholarships will help Tulsa’s youth develop an understanding of the role that health issues play in relation to poverty. NFN hopes this experience will encourage the participants to open their minds to a bigger picture. Once exposed to these types of issues, their future decisions and choices will be based on a broader perspective that will benefit the whole community.”

Financial need will be considered in two of the four applications, and scholarships will be awarded based on content and proposed advocacy that will help solve the issue raised in the essay.

Any 9th – 12th grade student planning to attend an accredited two- or four-year college or vocational technical school is eligible to participate and must submit their essay by 3 p.m. on April 30. The award will be held up to five years in an account until the student is enrolled. Winners will be announced at NFN’s annual Dinner & Diagnosis event in July 2009.

To obtain a full list of application requirements or to help sponsor a scholarship, call Georgia Tully at (918) 425-5578 ext. 128 or visit www.neighborforneighbor.org for more information.

NFN provides family assistance, housing, legal and life skills programs as well as medical, dental and optometry clinics to help the low income and disenfranchised of greater Tulsa break the cycle of poverty.
