Michael Patton, Executive Director of the Tulsa-based non-profit The Metropolitan Environmental Trust, also known as The M.E.T., delivered a passionate speech discussing how impressive the City of Jenks recycling efforts are. Patton spoke at a Jenks Chamber of Commerce Luncheon recently at the Jenks Holiday Inn Express.
The M.E.T. operates 12 recycling drop-off centers in eight different Oklahoma communities, including a location in Jenks across from City Hall. This recycling center receives the highest amount of recycling materials in the entire Tulsa Metro region. In fact, the Jenks location recycles more than twice the amount than any other location in the area and has done so for over a dozen years.
Patton believes the reason behind the citywide effort is due to “good leadership and good education in Jenks.” To put it plainly, the city is run very well and the Environmental club at Jenks High School is very good.
So, where does Jenks go from here? Annette Bowles, Jenks Chamber President says, “With over 30 percent of Jenks residents recycling on a regular basis, we expect that number to increase as the business community begins implementing green practices.”
Patton expects the city to sell the current recycling center’s location. Therefore, the M.E.T. needs to find a new location. When that time comes, they hope to expand.
The M.E.T. organizes litter cleanups, celebrations and conducts special collection events for a wide array of items. The M.E.T. also is concerned with issues of air quality, water conservation and more. Please visit www.metrecycle.com.
