Two benefit golf tournaments were recently held at the Owasso Golf and Athletic Club. Participants throughout the region came together to have a lot of fun while raising funds and awareness for the events.
The Tulsa Public Schools Golf Classic brought together area golfers to help young athletes through the upcoming school year. The athletics program coordinates the event every year in hopes to raise funds for teams to attend championships and other essentials relating to the department.
TPS Director of Athletics Stephanie Spring decided to create the event in 1998. “It was apparent that the district needed to find a way to raise much needed funds. The tournament was a way to bring athletes together to help provide the best program possible to students. It is very exciting to have so many companies and organizations participate year after year.”
A total of 144 participants made up 36 teams during the event. Special prizes were awarded at various holes around the course. Following the event, everyone enjoyed dinner together while trophies were given to the top teams.
The Susan G. Komen Golf Tournament recently painted the entire course pink. Wearing pink not only showed the participant’s support for the cause but also earned them a free mulligan. Most even brought pink golf balls to match their attire.
Established in 2002, the event has grown leaps and bounds. Patti Shaffer has enjoyed organizing the tournament every year. “One of my best friends survived breast cancer because of the funding that has been raised through research. I really wanted to become involved in the tournament for that reason. It is rewarding to know that the support of the teams will help fund additional research and hopefully help lead to a cure one day.”
She continues, “The Owasso Golf and Athletic Club has been a wonderful course to hold the tournament. My family and I have been members for a long time and felt that it was the right place. The organizers work closely with the management here and they are always very excited to host the tournament and help give back to the community.”
The Owasso Golf and Athletic Club as well as the Broken Arrow Golf and Athletic Club are owned by Lindsey Management. The company has been proud to continually support these and other benefit tournaments through the years.
