Tulsa Country Club Undergoes Renovation
Tulsa Country Club is getting an $8.5 million facelift to its clubhouse and golf course.
A news conference was held recently at the club to reveal the $2.5 million newly-renovated clubhouse and to discuss the beginning of a $6 million renovation of the golf course.
The clubhouse was redesigned by acclaimed architect, Tom Hoch, and now offers more than 25,000 square feet of amenities for members and guests. Included in the clubhouse are a member-friendly Pro Shop, first class locker rooms, a complete fitness center with new cardio equipment, an adult designated lounge, two new dining areas, a kids’ zone and an adult game room.
Golf course construction began Aug. 2 with the closing of the front nine holes. The entire course will close Aug. 16 and will re-open in May 2011.
The golf course was originally designed by A.W. Tillinghast, one of golf’s most respected course architects. The remodel of the course has been designed by Rees Jones, who has restored more of Tillinghast’s courses than any other architect.
“Our approach is to regain the feel of Tillinghast’s work while updating the golf course,” Jones said. “By implementing our plan, the layout will be enhanced and the playability will be improved.”
The renovated golf course design will feature new Bermuda grass for fairways, a variety of greens that will provide premier putting conditions, new irrigation for the entire property, re-alignment of tee boxes and a new pond feature that will allow the club to reduce its dependence on the city of Tulsa water supply for irrigation.
Although the course is expected to increase the difficulty rating after the renovation, the course will not necessarily play any harder than it does now. Additional tee boxes will be added to make the course enjoyable for all levels of play
General Manager of Tulsa Country Club, Jason Fiscus, said it is the perfect time for renovations.
“Although economic conditions certainly remain difficult, the reality is that construction costs aren’t likely to be as low as they are today,” Fiscus said. “Because the primary reason for undertaking these improvements is the needed replacement of aging assets, there really is no better time than now.”
Kevin Hayes, president of Tulsa Country Club’s board of directors, still encourages potential members to join the club during the renovations.
“There is an incredible sense of excitement around Tulsa Country Club right now,” Hayes said. “The value of a membership with Tulsa Country Club will be increasing substantially this year with the improvements being made.”
Golf activities will still be available during the renovation. Tulsa Country Club will continue to offer lessons to members and has arranged for members to play at other golf courses in the area.
Although the club will not have golf for a period of time, Fiscus still encourages members to take advantage of the other amenities that Tulsa Country Club offers.
“We expect to see an increase in member dining and social activity with the new clubhouse facilities,” Fiscus said. “We appreciate everyone’s understanding during this renovation of the course, and soon we will have an end product that will be truly amazing and well worth the wait.”
The course will re-open in May 2011.
