The 2010 Jenks Herb and Plant Festival was held in downtown Jenks Saturday, April 24 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Every year, the Jenks Herb and Plant Festival draws larger crowds due to a renewed national passion for gardening. Gardening is seen as a wise investment of time and resources that yields healthy benefits during these challenging financial times. Festival Chairman Jim Bailey says that last year’s economic downturn had little effect on the festival, and expects this year will be no exception.
The humble vision of Jenks Garden Club members Bill and Sandra Twilley to share the love of gardening by offering herbs and other plants in an open market atmosphere has become a much looked forward to event today.
The Jenks Garden Club uses funds raised at the festival for beautification projects in Jenks parks and public areas. Recent plans are to rejuvenate the pots on Main Street, as well as adding daffodil bulbs next fall in several planters on Main Street and Veterans Park.
Additionally, funds from the festival provide a full $1,000 college scholarship for a deserving Jenks horticulture graduate.
The newly completed Reasor’s in Jenks has donated $1,500 towards the event. Other sponsors include Southwood Landscape and Nursery, Public Service Company of Oklahoma, BancFirst, Wallace Properties, Tulsa Teachers Credit Union, David P. Puckett Insurance, Inc., Summit Apartments, Peace Frogs, The Sign Maker, Edward R. Jones, United Leasing/Integrity Printing, Jenks Express Magazine, Greater Tulsa Reporter Newspapers, Reverie Skin Care, Woodland West Pet Resort /Animal Hospital and Jenks Veterinary Hospital.
Recently the Jenks Garden Club and the Jenks Herb and Plant Festival planning committee hosted an “In Appreciation” Chili and Cornbread luncheon for the administrators, workers and the festival sponsors from the Jenks community.
