Oklahoma City, Okla. – The Tulsa women’s rowing team captured a bronze medal today at the Oklahoma Invitational on the North Canadian River in Oklahoma City, Okla. San Diego earned the team gold medal, OU was second and TU tied Kansas for third place.
“It was definitely a great way to start the spring,” Head Coach Kevin Harris said. “We won 10 out of 16 races this weekend, and it was a great opportunity for our team to work toward getting faster. We posted some really good results, especially in the Four, which went undefeated, and the Varsity 8+, which beat Kansas for the first time head-to-head in quite a while.”
The Golden Hurricane rowers combined for five top finishes on the day and 10 top marks in the regatta. The Varsity 4+ had two top times, while the Open 4+, Varsity 4+ and Lightweight 8+ had one top finish apiece in today’s races.
The Varsity 4+ topped both Kansas and San Diego, recording times of 8:11.52 and 8:04.87, respectively, to finish first, while the Open 4+ defeated Kansas with a time of 8:34.14.
In the Varsity 8+, the Golden Hurricane was nearly 10-seconds faster than Kansas, but trailed USD by 21 seconds. The Lightweight 8+ also split results on the day, falling to Oklahoma’s Novice 8+, but netted a three-second win over SMU. The 2nd Varsity 8+ struggled a little bit, falling to both Kansas and San Diego today.
“It was definitely a success for our team all around,” senior rower Jacqueline Malleo said. “We won 10 races, which is a quite an accomplishment for such an early-season race. We raced at a high intensity level, we were very excited and we showed that even though we are a small team, we are a powerful team. We are looking forward to our next regatta.”
The Tulsa rowers will return to action on March 27-28 at the San Diego Crew Classic.
