KUDOS OF THE MONTH: Tulsa Habitat for Humanity

COMMUNITY SUPPORT: Tulsa Habitat for Humanity receives strong support from volunteers, both in construction and funding. Above, the Public Service Company of Oklahoma donated funds last summer to create energy efficient homes for Habitat homeowners.

Tulsa Habitat for Humanity is a local, non-profit affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. The Tulsa affiliate works in partnership with low-income people to eliminate substandard housing conditions at a local level. The Tulsa affiliate began in 1988 and has completed over 200 homes as of this writing, providing shelter for nearly 1,000 Tulsans.

The mission: “Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with God and people everywhere, from all walks of life to develop communities with God’s people in need by building and renovating houses so that there are decent houses in decent communities in which people can live and grow into all that God intended.”

Information about locations of homes under construction and volunteer opportunities is available on the Web site, www.habitat-tulsa.org, or by calling (918) 592-4224.

Anyone is welcome to help build. Tulsa Habitat homes have been funded and built by churches, foundations, individuals and corporations. People from the funding organizations often volunteer their time and skills for building as well as their money for the materials.

Fundraising is vitally important to the work of Tulsa Habitat for Humanity. The annual fundraising event, Mardi Gras Magic, presented by Samson, is set for this year on March 6 at the Tulsa Renaissance Hotel. Please see page 11 of this month’s issue for an article and photo about the event, called by many one of the most popular fundraisers of the year.
