“Samba Under the Stars” was the theme at the Tulsa Zoo’s 18th Annual Waltz on the Wild Side June 20. The event offered a variety of entertainment and cuisine.
2008 Waltz Co-Chairs were Doug and Liza DeJarnette. The event included a silent and live auction, with items ranging from a “His and Hers” Dream Package, an exotic trip to South America, or even a Vespa scooter.
Guests danced to the tunes of Charlie Redd and the Full Flava Kings, while enjoying food from some of the finest restaurants and caterers in Tulsa.
Waltzon the Wild Side is a Tulsa tradition and one of the zoo’s most significant events of the year. Waltz has provided funding for many of the exhibits that families have enjoyed for almost two decades, such as the African Penguin Exhibit, Chimpanzee Connection, the Jaguar Exhibit and much more.
“The Waltz has regained its swagger over the past few years and this year was one of the best yet,” says Waltz Co-Chair Doug DeJarnette.
Waltz, which stands for We All Love the Tulsa Zoo, has a more far-reaching vision than just one evening of festivities and fun. Events like Waltz not only help your Tulsa Zoo, but it also benefits the community.
“Great zoos are symbols of great cities and we think we have one. The Tulsa Zoo offers animals, learning and family events all in one place. It is crucial to the long term growth of Tulsa to have viable relevant attractions and activities,” says Greg Owens, the 2008 Patron Chair along with his wife, Carol.
The proceeds from this year’s Waltz fund the reinvention of the zoo’s outdoor Amphitheater. The Amphitheater will not only receive major renovation, but it will be uniquely designed to house a permanent Exotic Animal Show featuring majestic free-flight birds and trained mammals.
This year’s sponsors included Apache Corporation, Odyssey Energy Services and Sheehan Pipe Line Construction Company.
Guests were encouraged to dress with a Latin flair to celebrate this year’s Latin-inspired “Samba Under the Stars” theme.
