Mayfest Begins Recycling Program

Many Tulsans have been recycling for years, either through the City of Tulsa’s curbside program or at one of the many drop-off locations throughout the metro area provided by The Metropolitan Environmental Trust (The M.e.t.). This year festival-goers will have the opportunity to recycle while at Mayfest.

Blue recycling bins will be placed in three locations on site, Samson Plaza at 3rd and Boulder, Williams Green at 3rd and Boston and at KidZone at 6th and Main. There will be two types of bins, those with white lids for aluminum and those with dark gray lids for plastic. Glass containers are not allowed at Mayfest, therefore, no recycling containers will be provided for glass.

Mayfest’s recycling program is a result of the efforts of the Mother Nature Needs You Campaign founded by Rainbow Girl, local recycling champion and Michael Patton, Executive Director of The M.e.t. and Mayfest Board Member.

“We want to be as green as possible and while we cannot completely replace trash cans with recycling bins, at the end of the day, some recycling at the event is better than none,” says Rainbow Girl.

Mayfest hopes to make a dent in the large amount of trash generated throughout the four days of the festival and to inspire other festival and event organizers to incorporate recycling into their events.

Mayfest is presented by MidFirst Bank. Other sponsors include The Children’s Hospital at St. Francis, Williams, Public Service Company of Oklahoma, Metropolitan Real Estate Investors, LLC, Smoothie King, Corona Extra, Hille Foundation, T.D. Williamson, Inc., OSU-Tulsa, The Gelvin Foundation, Straxis Technology and Crowne Plaza.

Mayfest will take place in downtown Tulsa May 15-18. For a complete listing of performances, artists and activities, visit www.tulsamayfest.com.
