Broken Arrow rallied from a two-goal third period deficit, then won in a shootout to sweep third-place in the GTR Cup Sunday at the BOK Center.
Cameron Hamilton scored on a scramble in front of Tulsa Twisters goalie Alan Tett with 20 seconds remaining to force extra time, then Berent Ostervold scored the winner in a shootout to give the Tigers a 5-4 victory and the consolation prize.
“It was definitely a fun way to finish and it was an entertaining game,’’ said Broken Arrow coach Darryl Diagnault. “Tulsa played well and played hard, but we didn’t quit and we didn’t give up. We got back in the game.
“It wasn‘t our best game and we came out a little flat. Tulsa took advantage of its opportunities and their goalie played well. We had to battle to stay in it.’’
Tett, an eighth-grader playing goalie for the first time in a varsity game, was impressive in stopping 22 of Broken Arrow’s 26 shots in regulation. Hamilton, an all-tournament selection, scored twice for the Tigers with all-tourney pick Matthew Strnad racking up two goals for the Twisters.
“Our kids felt more comfortable today,’’ said Tulsa coach Chris Simms, whose team fell 11-0 to Jenks in the opening round. “Jenks is a very talented team and this was our second time on the big ice. I had seven kids who play on our jayvee squad and two of them scored. We just felt more comfortable.’’
Apparently so. The Twisters led 4-2 three minutes into the third period when Strnad skated in from the right wing scored up close on Tigers goalie Ludwig Dischner.
Broken Arrow came within 4-3 at 11:01 when Armond Welch uncorked a lunging, off-balance shot from the right wing, Then, Hamilton sent the game into a shootout.
Armond Welch scored first in the shootout on a back handed attempt before Tulsa tied it after Landon Whomble tucked the puck just inside the post. Ostervold stepped up to deliver the game-winner and a 2-1 edge in extra time.
