Jenks Rips Twisters 11-0 in GTR Cup Opening Round

Jeff Wilson scored two goals and added five assists, powering Jenks past the Tulsa Twisters 11-0 in the opening game of the second GTR Cup on Feb. 11 at the BOK Center.

Ganon McMains and Kyle Messer each contributed two goals as the Trojans outshot Tulsa 67-7 and reached the championship game against Union for the second straight season.

“We played very, very well,’’ said Jenks coach Brad McMains, whose team leads the Tulsa Youth Hockey Association standings. “We passed the puck and they did everything we asked them to do, and that’s not to be greedy with the puck. I’m proud of our effort.

“The Tulsa Twisters are a young team and their goalie never quits.’’

Jenks peppered the Twisters’ Devyn Stowers with six goals in the first period, two more in the second and three in the third. Wilson scored the first two goals for the Trojans in the first three minutes, both coming from the top of the left-wing circle.

Messer converted on a breakaway to make it 3-0, dekeing a back hand past Stowers. Renner Willman blasted from the right-wing circle, Messer scored again unassisted and Derek Smith also fired from the right circle as Jenks built a 6-0 lead with 40 seconds left in the opening period.

McMains took a pass from Wilson to score on a 2-on-1 midway in the second period, then Conner Steyer sent a one-timer from the corner that caromed off a Twisters stake into the net.

Ahead 8-0 heading into the third period, Brennan Langva scored off Stowers’ glove, McMains scored once more and Bryce Noe finished it with 10 seconds left.

The Twisters’ best chance to score came six seconds deep into the final frame when Landon Whomble took the faceoff and sailed in alone with Jenks goalie Mason O’Brien. O’Brien executed a stick save and the Twisters went down without further incident.

The 2012 GTR Cup finals, which will feature arch rivals Jenks and Union, will be held at 1:30 today at the BOK Center. Union will be defending their 2011 GTR Cup championship.
