KUDOS OF THE MONTH: American Red Cross
HELPING OUT: A Tulsa Chapter of the American Red Cross volunteer is thanked by a resident following the devastating Tushka tornado this year.
There are nearly 700 chapters of the American Red Cross throughout the nation. In them, more than 15 million people are involved.
The Tulsa Chapter has become a much needed helping hand in the area and continues to make a difference in thousands of lives. It reaches out to those who have endured natural disasters and other emergencies.
In the instance of a natural disaster or even a house fire, the area chapter rushes to the scene to help in a variety of ways. The organization makes sure that the families are cared for until insurance sets in or they can get back onto their feet.
If a house is destroyed or needs repair after an incident occurs, the family is given a hotel room to stay in and the reassurance that someone cares and is there to help.
These efforts would not be possible without dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly to help others. They are trained to interview families, find out what their needs are and then provide them with resources. Many are given debit cards that are used to purchase clothing, food and anything else that the family needs.
In addition, the American Red Cross collects blood year round. Every year throughout the United States, four million people donate blood to the organization. This donation saves lives in hospitals every day.
With a successful year of collections, the Tulsa chapter was named the 2011 Region of the year.
