Class of 2010 Celebrates Commencement

REASONS TO CELEBRATE: Superintendent of Broken Arrow Public School Dr. Gary Gerber applauds the class of 2010.

The 102nd Annual Commenc-ement in the history of Broken Arrow High School proved to be an excellent night for the BAHS Class of 2010 at the Mabee Center at Oral Roberts University.

Over 1000 seniors walked across the stage of the Mabee Center to receive their diploma from Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Gary Gerber and members of the Broken Arrow Board of Education as an overflow crowd over 10,575 watched and roared its approval.

Dr. Gerber praised the Class of 2010 for its many accomplishments and achievements including state and regional championships for the Pride of Broken Arrow along with a top ten national finish; state championships in softball, boys’ cross country, wrestling, jazz, debate, and pole vault; along with national recognition for the Student Council, seven National Merit Finalists, two Academic All-Staters, one State Superintendent Arts Award winner, and 55 Oklahoma Academic Scholars.

Dr. Gerber reflected upon his own graduation as a proud member of the Broken Arrow High School Class of 1968. He reminded the 2010 graduates that while technology is changing almost daily, attributes such as gratitude and appreciation are as important in 2010 as they were in 1968.

“Saying thanks to your parents for their love and support and thanks to your teachers for their belief in you are as important for you to remember as it was when I was preparing to turn my tassel at my high school graduation.”

Principal Rob Armstrong pointed out the Class of 2010 had already earned over $2 million in college scholarships. He praised the new graduates for their character and commitment to making their school and community a better place and urged the graduates to keep up the good work as they move into the next phase of their lives.

“Your accomplishments are far more than what is reflected on your transcript and in the trophies you’ve received. You’ve contributed your time, money and in a sense, a part of you to make a community and a world a better place now and in the future. Class of 2010 continue to do all the good you can. That is what makes you special, and I applaud your efforts.

Representative of the Class of Distinction (Top 3 Percent Graduates) Anna Bennett reminded her classmates of the meaning of ‘commencement.’

“This event is called commencement for a reason. It’s the point from where the rest of our promising young lives commence. Graduation is the end of our life as we know it. Commencement is the beginning of life as we will. It’s time to go forth classmates, tigers, little giants and commence to becoming great.”

Senior Class President Jim Bui agreed with that assessment in his speech to the graduates, but also pointed out that the new graduates should not forget to reflect back on their high school memories even as they march forward into the real world.

“As we pack up our childhood and high school memories we must always remember to take them out sometime whether it’s for reminiscing, comfort or just a good ole laugh. After all, our experiences remind us of where we came from.”
