B.A. Board and Student Honored
The Broken Arrow Board of Education and Broken Arrow High School student Molly Priebe were both recognized with statewide awards at the 2010 State Superintendent’s Awards for Arts Excellence.
Priebe was honored for her excellence in the Broken Arrow High School band program. She was one of 124 Oklahoma high school seniors saluted by State Superintendent Garrett for arts success in the categories of band, dance, drama/theatre, orchestra, piano, visual art and vocal.
“The link between academic success and the arts cannot be overstated,” Garrett says. “Research shows that students involved in the arts have better attendance and are more likely to be recognized for academic achievement and to seek student leadership roles.”
At the same event, the Broken Arrow Board of Education was honored as the 2010 recipient of the Oklahoma Alliance for Arts Education (OAAE) School Board Award.
The OAAE in cooperation with the Oklahoma State Department of Education, Oklahoma State School Boards Association, and Cooperative Council for Oklahoma School Administration annually selects for statewide recognition a local school board that has demonstrated outstanding leadership and advocacy for the arts and arts education in their school communities.
Jeff Mills, executive director of the Oklahoma State School Boards Association, assisted Garrett in recognizing the Broken Arrow School Board.
The Broken Arrow Board was commended for passage of two bond issues that led to the building of the School District’s state of the art Performing Arts Center and for producing high-caliber programs during the PAC’s inaugural season entitled “Broadway, Branson, and the Blues.”
