Broken Arrow Public Schools honored the district’s 25-school site Teacher of the Year for the 2009-2010 school year at a special recognition breakfast held at Central on Main.
Reigning 2009 BAPS Teacher of the Year Liliane Vannoy of Haskell Middle School served as emcee for the event. She praised the award-winning teachers for their educator skills, attitudes and work ethic.
“Today and on many other occasions throughout this year, your colleagues, students and community will try to honor you for the job you do so well because your achievements inspire us to try to reach your level of excellence. You have been chosen for your personality, dedication and character, but most of all by the difference that you make on people’s lives.”
Superintendent, Dr. Gary Gerber also praised the honored teachers, who were selected as their school’s teacher of the year by the other teachers at their respective school site.
“You have been greatly honored by your peers,” Dr. Gerber said to the 2009-2010 honorees. “I applaud you for your courage to succeed for the confidence and trust placed in you by your peers as representatives of this great profession. More importantly to me though, is that to reach this professional level that you have attained, you have personally accepted a challenge created from parents who entrust their children to you every day. The challenge of course, is to arrive every day at school, with confident expectation that every child is going to learn something from you that day. In so doing you create hope for our world, and motivation for the children committed to you, motivation for each of them to reach for the stars.”
Board of Education President Sharon Whelpley expressed appreciation to the teachers of the year for a job well done and pointed out that several of the 2009-2010 honorees are themselves graduates of the Broken Arrow School District.
“Many of you, who are sitting as teachers of the year from your sites, have graduated from Broken Arrow. It shows the total package of what Broken Arrow Public Schools offers to our community, a commitment to public education at its finest.”
Site Teachers of the Year honored at the special breakfast were Sheryl Ree, Lea Ann Fry, Tonya Standley, Joan Kelly, Loren Pettys, Ellen Huheey, Dana Watson, Shelley Olds, Tammy Strickland, Dawn Guthrie, Mendy Schanck, Jamie Wassom, Lisa Calvert, Janice Airhart, Jeremy Bryan, Laura Smith, Janice Curry, Amy Hickman, Kit Parker, Kathy Williams, Kristin Gillespie, Teri Callison, Leslie Jones, Denise Green and Donell Wilson.
One of the individuals above will hear his or her name called out as the 2009-2010 Broken Arrow Public Schools District Teacher of the Year at the TOY Reception Feb. 18, 2010. The Top 10 Finalists for the district’s Teacher of the Year will be announced in mid-January.
Vannoy and Executive Director of Professional Development and Ancillary Instructional Services, Dawna Mosburg also gave special recognition to the BAPS Partners in Education program for funding the breakfast.
Rocket Brothers, Fat Cat Catering and Floral Designs of Floral Haven were also recognized for their support of the breakfast and the BAPS Teacher of the Year Program.
All who attended the recognition event also expressed appreciation for the music performed by the BAHS Orchestra’s String Quartet.
