Broken Arrow High School senior Aaron Dowler has been selected as a recipient of the prestigious Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence Academic All-State Scholar Award.
Dowler, who is the Class President of the BAHS Class of 2008, is one of 100 high school seniors enrolled in Oklahoma public school districts selected to receive this award.
Each of the 2008 Academic All-Staters will receive a $2,000 scholarship, a medallion and a commemorative plaque. The All-Staters will be recognized at the Foundation for Excellence 22nd Annual Academic Awards Banquet Saturday, May 17 in Tulsa.
University of Oklahoma President David L. Boren is Chairman and founder of the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence. He describes the selection of the scholars as “Oklahoma’s most rigorous academic competition.”
A quick look at the student’s ACT scores prove that claim true: the average ACT score among the 2008 Academic All State selections is 32.5. A perfect score is 36.
To be nominated for Academic All-State, a student must meet one of the following criteria: an ACT composite score of at least 30, an SAT score of at least 1350 or be selected as a semifinalist for a National Merit, National Achievement, or National Hispanic Scholarship.
Eligible students are nominated by their principal and are selected on the basis of academic achievement, extracurricular activities, community involvement, and also on the basis of an essay submitted by each nominee.
Dowler, who is the son of Laura and David Dowler, is a member of National Honor Society, Student Council, COLABASH and participates in Varsity football and Fellowship of Christian Athletes, in addition to being senior class president.
“I am so pleased that Aaron has been named a 2008 Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence Academic All-State scholar,” BAHS Principal Rob Armstrong says. “This is an esteemed academic selection process, and Aaron is certainly worthy of this level of acclaim.”
Dowler plans to attend Pepperdine University and study integrated marketing.
